Fortune's selection process begins with rating the Fortune 1,000 companies by revenue and then narrowing the list to the top 10 in each of 63 industries. From that list, executives, directors and analysts rate the companies in their industry in eight areas: innovation, people management, use of corporate assets, social responsibility, quality of management, financial soundness, long-term investment and quality of products/services.
Devon scored a 7.01 in its industry, placing it third among the mining, crude-oil and production companies. Apache placed highest with a 7.16 score and Occidental Petroleum totaled 7.13.
Specifically, Devon earned a four ranking in the innovation and people management areas; threes in the use of corporate assets, financial soundness and quality of products/services areas, a two in long-term investment and ones in social responsibility and quality of management.
Oklahoma City's Chesapeake Energy was listed as a contender by Fortune by placing sixth in the mining, crude-oil and production companies.
ONEOK topped its industry list while Williams ranked third in its category.
With three companies listed, Oklahoma tied Colorado, outpaced Arkansas's two companies, Kansas' one company and New Mexico without a listing of its neighboring states. Missouri's six companies and Texas' 34 listings topped Oklahoma.
