Staying Ahead of the Curve

To keep up with its growing community, Edmond Medical Center plans sizable expansion

Billing itself as "A Great Place to Grow," the city of Edmond is living up to the promise. One of the busiest communities in Oklahoma, the town is a hubbub of activity, teeming with movers-and-shakers and construction crews.

And, as one of the city's top five employers, Edmond Medical Center has no intention of lagging behind.

"All of our growth at the hospital is a mirror of what's happening in the Edmond community," said Ed Gray, chief executive of Edmond Medical Center. "The real key for us is to meet the demands of a growing community by trying to be prospective and staying ahead of the curve."

According to Gray, the catalyst for developing an overall master plan to keep them ahead of the curve occurred about two years ago as the hospital experienced an increased demand for services. Recognizing the situation as an opportunity as well as a responsibility, administrative leadership at EMC put pen to paper, devising a comprehensive strategic response that is service-oriented yet maintains their competitive edge in the health care arena.

"The hospital is a community-based institution," Gray said, "If we stay ahead of the curve in terms of meeting the needs and expectations of the community, the rest of the elements of what a hospital is
