Biology professor to take asst. provost post at OCU

Kent
Buchanan, professor and chairman of the biology department, will assume the
position July 1. He has taught at OCU since 2006. A native of Oklahoma, Buchanan
received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in microbiology from the
University of Oklahoma, and a Ph.D. in
microbiology and
immunology from the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center.

Prior to OCU, he worked as
an associate research scientist at Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation, and
as a research assistant professor at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences
Center. He was then a tenured professor of microbiology and immunology at
Tulane University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans. After Hurricane
Katrina, he returned to Oklahoma.

He has served as chairman of Oklahoma City University’s Faculty
Senate Executive Committee, and has been a member of the board of trustees. He has
chaired – or been a member of – many of the university’s councils and committees.

In 2009, he was appointed to the board of Science Museum of
Oklahoma, and in 2010, he was appointed to the board of regents of Oklahoma
School of Science and Math. Buchanan serves on the Mission Council for Church
of the Servant United Methodist Church.
